The video that I have chosen to show is one on journaling and the benefits that it has. I think it is important that my students see this before they actually begin the process of journaling their technology use. It is crucial that they see the importance of it and that the more that they put into it the more that they will get out of it. I think this video will help them to see that their journaling will help them manage their technology usage (hopefully) but will also benefit different aspects of their lives outside of this one topic.

While the students watch the video, I don’t necessarily need them to take notes on the information given in the video, but I do want to see some kind of interaction with the video. If notes work best that is great, but if not they are also able to make a chart, or write down any ideas for their own journals that may come to mind.  I want this video to be a catalyst for intrigue so that this assignment has real value.

Discussion groups will be set up after watching the video so that they have the opportunity to share ideas or respond in small intimate groups. This time can be used for discussing ideas in the video (do they agree or disagree with some of the points?) as well as bouncing ideas for their own journals off of each other.

In terms of the students actual journaling time (regardless of what media they choose to complete this) they will have 10-15 mins at the beginning or the end of the day to write down their thoughts and feelings about their usage as well as how it affected their feelings and productivity for that day.

As well as this video, I hope to find another to go along with it which shares different, creative ways to keep a journal so that the students can see different options and which might work best for them. Overall, this video is a valuable resource to show the benefits that keeping a journal can have. My hope is that this assignment will feel like less than work and turn into something that the students can actually enjoy and use to reflect on all areas of their lives.
